‘MOST OBSCURE COVER’ SERIES

I am always coming across great covers and it makes me want to share the experience. I guess now that I have a blog I can! I plan to post one a week maybe more.

Recalling my love of Roland Gift and the soundtrack to my teens / twenties made me think of Kate Bush whose album Hounds of Love was on often when I was deep into painting or sketching for studio classes.

Here is an incredible cover of Kate’s ‘Running up that Hill’ by a great British group MPHO.

And just because this is the first of the series, why not share 2 great covers to start the series right? Bill Wither’s ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ is one of my all time favourite songs and all though there have been lots of great covers, this was the cover that got me into his music.

I met this band, Adam Again, when I was 15 and I got a chance to work for them at a festival. They were a great act from Cali. I became friends with Gene’s wife and bandmate Riki, but we lost touch somewhere in my twenties so I was saddened to hear that Gene Eugene, the lead singer and founder, died an early death at the age of 40. Hanging out with Adam Again when I was so young, watching their performances and dissecting Gene’s choice in arranging his compositions as well as his lyrical styling stirred me so much that I was almost on my way to a career as a musician until I let it go for visual art. I still miss that dream though of being in some great soul act that plays for the love of the beats and not for the $.

They also did a mean cover of The Valentine Brother’s ‘Money’s Too Tight to Mention’ that rivaled Simply Red’s version.

If you don’t know of Adam Again, check out more of their songs on Youtube.
