THE MORNING AFTER, THE YEAR BEFORE – NUIT BLANCHE 2010

“The Garden of Eden” by artist Sophie DeFranscesca at Lausberg Contemporary, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010.

Today marks the 1 yr anniversary of sinking myself back into art. At Nuit Blanche last year I was cold (as I will be tonight) and tired (I had just moved into Toronto that afternoon) so subtleties were lost on me, but the next day there was a nice ‘lazy-Sunday’ vibe hovering over Queen West that was better suited to casually scanning the galleries and taking in what I missed the night before.

The show at Lausberg Contemporary (their former location on Queen West) of artist Sophie and Franco DeFrancesca was the one that is still, a year later, fixed in my mind.

Lausberg Contemporary (Galerie Lausberg) is always good for a jolt of colour. Their shows are a sight for sore eyes looking for something fresh to rejuvenate the senses, the perfect pick-me-up! As I entered the gallery, I loved the lyrical way Sophie’s sculptures were placed dancing your eye from one piece to the next. And I loved the inclusion of a pair of black stocking legs intersecting the sight line of the black mesh gown. I just assumed that the legs hiding behind the white wall were part of the show – until they moved!

The legs were attached to Lausberg’s stunning gallery assistant. Sitting there working with her poppy red sweater and white dress she was the cherry on top of an aesthetic Sunday!

Tonight is the 6th annual Scotiabank Nuit Blanche in Toronto and I am breaking out the pro camera to find something fresh from 2011.
