SOUNDSTREAMS: From one ‘exstream’ to another

Paris to Dakar by Peter Eötvös

“Culturally provocative” programming!

Soundstreams is this jewel of an arts organization that I am delighted to have found.

“Soundstreams is an international centre for new directions in music programming culturally provocative concerts and festivals by weaving together music and ideas from globally diverse genres, artists and eras.”

In January I was feet away from soprano Carla Huhtanen as she drenched us with her powerful voice, singing in her native language a composition by contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (Love from Afar) that used the words of their nationally celebrated poet Eino Leino..

In February I was lifted off my seat during the performance of Sealed Angel that merged dance choreographed by Lars Scheibner (German Choreographer) with the music by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin. The Canadian dancers (ProArteDanza) and chorale choir (Elmer Iseler Singers and the Amadeus Choir) were a divine mix.

This past week I was at another Soundstreams event that included a talk with Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös followed by a really special performance of his work.

With a busy event schedule, there is something for everyone!
